Are Yaktrax good on ice?

Despite their diminutive design, the Yaktrax Pro provide amazing traction on snow and packed snow and some additional traction on ice. They are also fine on cobblestone and pavement, even if they have a slightly cushy feel to them.

When wearing Yaktrax® the Yaktrax® coils should sit flat on the sole of the shoe or boot. The outer band of the Yaktrax® should grip the entire outside edge of the footwear. If you are wearing Yaktrax® Pro the strap end should be on the outer edge of the foot.

Yaktrax Pro

Where the Pro differs from the Walker is in a velcro strap across the top of the foot, which secures the upper over the shoe so that it won't slide off and the coils will stay in place. This is a particularly useful feature in deep snow, where the Walker could get pulled off.

When should I wear Yaktrax?

Prior to a deep woods trek, snowshoers can use Yaktrax around the lodge or in milder conditions. Some snowshoers strap on Yaktrax while on packed trails, then switch to snowshoes when they get to deeper snow. Given the lightweight design, Yaktrax easily fit into a backpack for use as needed.

Can you drive with yak tracks on?

Are yak tracks the same as Microspikes?

Just looking at the two products side-by-side, you can tell that Microspikes will be grippier than Yaktrax. The 9.55mm spikes “bite” the solid ice better than Yaktrax 1.2mm steel coils. Microspikes are also made of stainless steel, which is stronger than the steel alloy used in Yaktrax.

How should Microspikes fit?

Microspikes fit over both my hiking boots and my running shoes. When you're sizing your own pair, they should be as snug as possible around your shoes. If you can, try them on in person if you can and make sure they fit all the pairs of shoes you want to put them over.

Can you use Microspikes on rocks?

Microspikes work best with snow and mixed ice and rock. With smaller points, they'll put up with mixed travel on rock better than crampons. However when snow hardens or you face hard ice for significant periods, microspikes lose their usefulness.

Do you need Microspikes in summer?

In the summer, some hikers also bring microspikes. Especially in the early summer months if there are patches of snow remaining on mostly snow-free trails to give hikers some traction when crossing those patches. These are the microspikes I wear.

Do Microspikes wear out?

While I wouldn't put my Microspikes on unless there is good reason, I wouldn't take them off for a short gap in the ice/snow. And yes, they will wear out eventually.

What are Yaktrax made of?

Yaktrax, made by a Bremerton company of the same name, are bands of rubber wrapped in steel coils that stretch to fit over the bottom of shoes to provide traction on ice and compact snow.

Do they make Yaktrax for kids?
